Eric was too rushed, Sourcery was kind of lame in the parts with the Sourcerer -- he was this big jerk and then suddenly he turns nice, pffft -- and Equal Rites was just... dull. The rest I liked. Thief of Time and Going Postal are really good too.

The Watch books are my absolute favorites, and along with Simon Jester I must cast my vote for Night Watch as number one. The Death ones are great too.

Going Postal so far has been great what does everyone else think of it?

You're absolutely right. It is quite hard to pull off a book where the internal dialog of the main character consists only of "Ook."

Better to remain in the wings, and let your internal (and spoken) dialog be revealed indirectly.

I had just recently read Eric (leaving The Last Hero, Hat full of Sky and The Wee Free Men (those two count as discworld, right?) as the only one's I haven't read)

I just finished Lords and Ladies (reading them out of order) and Pratchett Is A Freaking Genius.

Yes he is, but L&L is harly his best work

The Tiffany Aching stories are Discworld. Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are in the Wee Free Men, as are the Mac Nac Feegle, who are in Carpe Jugulum.

Yeah, but it struck me in a different way in that book. I realized that Pratchett knows more about magic than most magickians. And other things.

Good Omens is my favourite Pratchett to date. Of the discworld books, I have a hard time choosing. There are none that I wouldn't reread, but there are about five or six that I reread frequently (every couple of years or so). I haven't gotten my hands on Monstrous Regiment or Going Postal yet -- I can't afford to buy them new and it takes ages for them to start appearing in libraries and second hand bookshops.

I have a friend who takes great pleasure in reminding me at every opportunity that his mother gets an autographed copy of every Pratchett the day it is published. For obvious reasons, those are not lent to anybody. Now where did I leave my ski mask and crowbar?

I haven't read Discworld yet, (but I plan to), but I did find a book the other day of the art of Discworld. The artwork for the reaper is gorgeous!

I'm reading The Wee Free Men right now. Pratchett loves puns and often carries them through a whole book.

Pictsies! Who else could've thought of taking the anchient race of the Picts, who covered themselves in blue tattoos, and shrinking them to the size of pixies.

The Pratchett book I really want to read is a sequel to "Strata". This could be called a Discworld book too. It's about a flat Earth that's been found in space, but its inhabitants are in danger because the anchient machinery that's kept it running is breaking down and the spare parts are nearly gone. (Then there's the small matter of a planet landing on a spaceship, causing it to crash...) What's left unsolved is why this flat Earth is modeled on Earth, out of all the planets with sapient life.

I'm reading "Monstrous Regiment" right now then will be on to "Hat Full of Sky" (which still isn't on the poll!) and then finish up with "Going Postal".

One question. Just what the heck is "swede" as in "swede eating"? I've noticed this used as an epithet many times in the Discworld books.

Then there's "slumpie"...

Since I haven't read anthing from Discworld, is there one that I need to start out with? I mean, do they have a certain order to them?

My first Pratchett book was Guards! Guards!

I think it's also the best, however the funniest (half-) Pratchett book I've read was 'Good Omens' - one of the few (besides 'blue moon rising') that has actually had me creasing up so much I could barely read it.

I loved 'Equal Rites', in fact I love all of the 'Granny Weatherwax' series, but by Carpe Jugulum she's got a little bit too powerful, I'd have expected her to lose at least a few times by now. The same goes for Sam, he's had too much going right for him, and Sybil disappears into the background too far. From a powerful stop-at-nothing woman, she's turned into a housewife, which is a shame.

The weakest, imho, was 'the lost continent' in trying too hard to be funny over actual plot. Reaper man I can't remember - Was that the one with Mort in it? If it's that one you're talking about, I loved that one.

I own most of them, and would gladly liberate those signed copies from whoever has them

Reaper Man doesn't have Mort in it. RM's the one where Death gets replaced as the Discworld Death. IIRC it's also where the Death Of Rats makes its debut. SQUEAK.

What I'd like to see is a follow up to Equal Rites. The first and only female Wizard in Discworld history goes to Unseen University and ?????? Pratchett has left his biggest plot hole in the series right there with no further mention of her in any of the later books.

I recently finished "Going Postal". One of the best. Now I'm reading the first "Science of Discworld" book.

I'm reading Going Postal right now (yay for employee benefits at Waldenbooks! I get to borrow this book for free!). Funny book so far, and Captain Carrot made a cameo appearance! He hasn't been in a book since Night Watch, and even then it wasn't more than a cameo. I count Jingo as his last true appearance.

Of course, that means that the next pratchett book will probably center on the witches since he hasn't done one in a long time...
