So it seems like this guy : http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2008-03-25 may not have been actually imagining things.

This is awesome how a throwaway gag in a comic nearly ten years ago becomes a piece of world building.

I would have never made that connection.

And I'm not sure what it says about you that you did. :D

Definitely not. They are felidae.

Honestly, they look like chinchillas or some kind of ground-squirrel, to me.

And even if they were cats, they're definitely not the kind the cats he meant.

That I have a good memory and association skills? :D

But I guess everybody's right now that they're no longer in space, they look more like Chinchillas.

I hear "chinchilla," and I think of Schlock's insult towards Kevyn's beard. I don't remember which book (I think it was Mad Scientist, because I seem to remember Kevyn without glasses), but Kevyn's response was "Oooh, no plunder for you!" :)

Have you ever actually seen a chinchilla? I somewhat doubt it.

Yeah, they may not look exactly like cats, but they look more like cats than a chinchilla. I'd say some kind of big cat though, like a cougar, rather than a house cat. Their muzzles stick out too much for a house cat.

Captain Schnauzerface looks like a schnauzer to me.

Just with perky little ears instead of droopy ones. And obviously he has to trim the beard and broom mustache to fit in his exosuit.

I'm getting more of a fox vibe than a cat or schnauzer.

I'd say the ears are too short and the muzzle is too wide in proportion to the rest of the head for a fox.

I can see why you would say so, but I disagree.
Just compare this comic to this photo. Same shape. Or maybe this photo, with matching fur colour too.

It's a cat. Definitely a cat.

More like a Jack Russell terrier to me, even if the ears do not droop.

The shape of the captain's face is wrong . . . much too dished for a capybara.

The captain is more canid or possibly small ursoid.
