In some sense, this is just a normal computing problem, how do you trust the security of a remotely signed package? Can you trust the remote signer to not be compromised?

But if you're into sci-fi on the soft side, there's "A Fire Upon The Deep", where you can have a data stream that has to be executed in order to retrieve the data (active data ...)

She disassembled herself. I'm pretty sure she figured out a way to send a package her crazy selves will accept.

I'm guessing that it's not INTENDED to ever be executed. or it's intended to ONLY be executed in a controlled clean-room environment, for purposes of inspecting it.

The trick isn't to get crazy-chinook to run a program that will fix her... The trick is to get crazy-Chinook to invest SO MUCH EFFORT in analyzing and deciphering that program, that she will eventually FIX HERSELF, as a SIDE EFFECT. The program itself may be as simple as an incredibly obfuscated version of "hello world".

A good starting point would be to include data which describes a complete history of the original forgetfullness timer Eina-Afa was running, an analysis of what damage it would likely have to done to Chinook, a history of how Chinook's friends are worried about her, an elaborate parable of honest end-users scared of their own creation...

All obsfucated and encrypted, so that in order to READ the data, Chinook has to invest an inordinate amount of time in FINDING the data, and anticipating the data, and cross-checking the data, and hopefully eventually even coming to believe the data... and viola. Chinook has cured herself as a side effect of discovering the data hidden in that executable.

... the sad thing is, in Fire, you have "Zones of thought", roughly based on distance from the galactic center, where different laws of physics apply, and when you are in the space in-between the galaxies, you can actually have data where trying to decipher the data results in "running" it as a program in exactly the manner you just described.

... complete with all the expected problems of executing someone else's infectious virus.

(Ok, I am drastically simplifiying the book's plotline.)
