I can't imagine why they would want to run away from anything, considering after all these years the threat hasn't arrived yet.

/squints at grahamf.

have you forgotten the plot? The cataclysm every few millennia that wipes out all space faring races? That's what those who seek oblivion are fleeing.

Or . . . do the races look around, discover their forerunners missing, decide that something is wiping them out, and . . . run away?

How many hidden worlds are plummeting through intergalactic space? Or orbiting hidden stars?

I'm parsing it as follows:

"once you get a hold of the grand telescopic array, you'll be able to see - and therefore destroy - many things, especially anything in this galaxy."

"Other people can ALSO get hold of or build a grand telescopic array and see YOU and destroy you."

"Then you realise all it takes is one asshole with a long gun and an array to shoot you over many, many, many millenia, and you realise you have to go dark to survive."

"The way to survive is to get far enough away (be gone) that it takes the grand telescopic array so long to scan for your existence that the civilisation who made it destroys itself first (be forgotten in oblivion)"

Once you know (of the operational threat a big spotter and long gun has), you go (to a place where it's very unlikely a big spotter and a long gun can spot you and shoot you).

Good point - you'd spot the past if your telescope is big enough.

It does also mean it's easier knowing where you're throwing your forward spotters to, though.

Maybe a neighboring galaxy is so terrifyingly messed up (and has been for eons) that everyone runs or goes into hiding to avoid attracting attention?

Trying to figure out how seeing something presumably very far away and very much in the past would make civilizations millions of years apart freak out. Are they seeing the same thing?

Someone in the All-Star made reference that they are hiding from entropy. (I'm too busy/lazy at the moment to find the link) Entropy increases as a system moves towards equilibrium. Maybe once a civilization builds a large enough telescope, they realize the universe at equilibrium has no intelligent life. Then the whole civilization promptly begins minimize how much entropy they produce, to slow down how quickly they are moving towards that equilibrium.

Hence you get the All-Star, and the Oafan's being shuttled into virtual states, as those systems are much lower entropy-producing than meatware.

That doesn't explain why one civilization took off on a planet, though.

And we may never know, thanks to yet another scene change just as the explanation is expected to show up.

At this point i suspect Howard has got nothing.

Who knows? Could be religion (Oogoomoogoo says we have to move!), could be politics (We must move away from those inferior blankians!), could be ascendance, could be they wanted a better view, or even just a new view.

Could also be that the first one to evolve into star travel didn't understand they were the first and decided that a) they must have had predecessors and b) something bad must have happened to the predecessors.

There is also the possibility that with a big enough array they would be able to see to the edge of the universe.

What they saw encouraged them to head "out there".

- The universe is nonlinear in it's properties just like water and there is a phase change in it's history that totally negates the linear regression idea of a big bang
- The universe is closed yet expanding like a bubble and what they saw was their backside and it was huge.
- There is a black hole matrix in the interstellar void where the first ones are hiding from something that came through the looking glass and it wasn't Alice.
- They just wanted to leave Orion's Belt.

Well - seems to me the group that came through Sol system and kicked loose the dinosaur killer felt the need to keep moving.
The Oafans fled the Panurl/'lightless ones', which might or might not have had anything to do with the other events/rounds of extinction.
The inhabitants of the Allstar fled a war that their good intentions and another race's fanaticism created.
So, those certainly weren't just scares due to deep xenoarcheology.

Is that image a whole mess of world ships that left the galaxy?

Because at that distance those things are too big to be stars.
