I wonder if the UNS is really going to employ cat-sized killbots build out of nano-assemblers or if they will settle with "ordinary" grey goo.

I think there'd be something funny about Pibald's scenario if it turned out to be true. The nano-assemblers idea is a bit much, given that there are much more efficient and less easily defeated methods of gaining control of the base. But some sort of smuggled force makes sense. If I had to bet money, I'd say some of the Gavs aren't exactly what they seem to be. They could be either outright replacements or programmed to betray the rest when the time comes.

There'd also be a certain irony if the smuggled force turned out to be the Toughs themselves.

I still can't get past the fact that someone abandoned this thing. There had to be a good reason for that.

No, that's still paranoia actually. It's just correct.

But being correct removes it from the technical definitions for paranoia. At that point, Pi becomes a sane, well-adjusted individual accustomed to living in a universe where there really *ARE* malign conspiracies out to get him.

Paranoia by definition includes the belief that people are out to get you, and that you, specifically, are being persecuted. This belief may be correct, but the irrational belief is itself paranoia.

For instance, the original quote "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you" is significantly more accurate than the paraphrased "It's not paranoia if they really are out to get you,".

If we define the universe as a conspiracy laden place with people out to get Pi specifically he is in fact not paranoid. But delve further into Pi and we learn that he's not always correct, though he is correct more often than you would expect a paranoid person, who is given to delusions, to be.

Then again Pibald is clinically paranoid, and takes(or is supposed to take) medicine for that condition. So there is that.

The problem is that neither Toughs nor GAVCorps knows just how many of the Diversity Engineering Institute's transmorgified Gaavs have been compromised by UNS (it could be ALL of them). As a matter of fact DEI's transmorgrifier technology sounds suspiciously like another adaptation of Project Laz'r'us that UNS is testing, and Binnie's partial resurrection looks somewhat like Kevyn's blood nannie.

The quote is part of a trinity, actually:
1. Even paranoids have enemies.
2. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.
3. It's not paranoia when they really are out to get you.

There's no evidence to indicate Pi believes there is a conspiracy directed at him specifically, though. This has never been shown.

Is he, though? Maybe they're just drugging up him to keep him docile.

looks like one of my theories just gained more supporting evidence:

specifically, it looks like the UNS used lazarus nannies to create a 'false' gav, than sent him to join up with the diversity institute.

Or corrupt an existing Gav...
Perhaps Redhack turns the Gavs into ninja zombies under the control of Colonel Krum?

Picture this: Blood nanies that overwrite the existing mind with a hacked 'backup' version (Para-style), or just an entirely new version (Max style).
Distribution? Go back to the Max/Para tooth: The planted cameras spitting the hack nannies onto the Gavs. My not be true spit... these could just be a food additive, or airborne. Or any of a dozen other things.

So: Gavs unearth the tech. Gavs figure out what it is. Gavs get hacked to be mindless automotons at this point, their work done (breaking all the eggs...)

Or, they creaated a copy Gav which contained Laz 'R' Us nannies, ad during the transmogrification process, the nannies took over the Can. Also, if the Can is the Red Hack, of course all the Gavs are infected. There would be no reason to let any remain uncontrolled.
