Bunnigus is finally giving us the exposition that is literally over a decade overdue:

Actually, we've gotten this exposition, at least up to this point, on prior occasions. I think we got the general shape of things during the zombie Xinchub incident.

Even after the nanites showed up repeatedly, the whole background on Project Laz'r'us seemed to be kept kind of in the dark. I don't remember the "thirty-one years ago" detail for one thing...

You haven't been paying attention.

Note the references to twenty-six years, and to one-point-six trillion Terran sophonts.

Which led to http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2007-12-20

But "Pandora" doesn't remember that. And she can't be convinced until she knows why she doesn't.

Huh, I should have remembered that; this was the strip on the day I started reading.

I think this plot is older.

Do you recall the good doctor?

Not Edward.

The doctor that introduced us to the magic cryokit.
Yes, this doctor: http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2000-10-30

I've been waiting some years, and I think the shoe will now drop.

I'm positive that xinchub isn't our first runt soldier.
I'm also quite confident it wasn't Kevin.

That's right, the Doctor isn't dead: http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2001-06-17

That's right, he went runt and fled, leaving the rest of his body behind.

I'd certainly believe he isn't dead; he "died" in the most obvious way that would convince his friends (and the audience) while letting him escape.

But he may not have fled the company. The plot could go deeper than that.

Our author likes long-delayed joke setups.

We also know that Doyt made a pretty silly-looking leap of "logic" when he first met Dr. Edward Bunnigus.

Doyt wrote:
"Your doctor is a hardened criminal, now disguised or altered to appera as a woman. He is wanted across human space for crimes committed over two dozen star systems."

http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2001-03-01
What if Doyt's assumption wasn't so crazy after all? After all, Bunnigus was hired on a whim for rather obvious reason...like her appearance was tailor-made to get her onto Tagon's ship...

Even if Doyt was wrong, this would explain why he could make such an absurd leap; he surely wasn't told about Project Laz'r'us, but he may have been told a cover story about changing appearance.

Another option is that Bunni's character arc has changed since she was first introduced. I seem to recall (though I could be misremembering) that Howard said his original plan for her was to be more of the "stripper with a heart of gold" type, and that didn't exactly pan out. Still, I guess only time will tell just how much we really know about Bunni.

I don't remember when, but it *has* been mentioned that the old doctor was related to the Laz'r'us-project, which was the reason he was on the run. I think it was Petey, when he explained that he got the Laz'r'us-data from the Magic Cryokit.

Of course, there was another hint even long before that.
Does anyone still remember the April Fool's Joke 2002?

Doctor:Hey, everyone! I'm back, and I managed to resurrect hob, too!
Elf:Hob?Is that really you?
Doctor:These Nano-Meme-Bots I invented should make us all effectively immortal.
Elf:Showing up the day after the funeral... Giving us a lame-o, sci-fantasy explanation like that... I dunno.
Narrator:Hah, Hah. April fools!
Elf:Hey everybody! It's open season on jerk narrators.
SFX:POOF
Narrator:Oops. That's my cue to leave!
Dun dun DUUUUN.

Yep. His status is first mentioned here:

http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2003-02-09

Then confirmed by Petey here: http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2006-07-25

It also came up during the "Sharp End of the Stick" wrapup, Petey talking about where he got the supersoldier tech.

I remember. Do you remember how, just one year earlier, the narrator said Schlock Mercenary doesn't do April Fools jokes?
Just one year earlier we had the week of watching Tagon's gate-clone die, when we didn't yet know it was a gate clone.

Narrator wrote:
Okay, okay. Face time with the author... I'll say this much. This last week has NOT been an extended April Fools' Day joke. This strip is read internationally, and I'm not sure if English speakers outside of the U.S. are stupid enough to celebrate a holiday that applauds the foolish, the prankster, and the inane. Here at Schlock Mercenary we'd like to think we're above that.

Still, it would have made a pretty good joke.

So, how many of Tagon's crew could potentially still be alive? How many went through the magic cyrokit? Thanks to some convenient diamond-beetles, all of them.
