Eh. This book started with Murtagh being nearly completely splattered against the walls.

Unless hs lands in the death goo and is immediately absorbed into the collective archive mass stuff or whatever at any rate.

I hope nothing bad happens, Eby is one of my faves.
Aw crap. I forgot an important detail: Eby's brain is in his pelvic cradle. This could, in fact, be very bad.

We've seen revivals from worse than that without issue.

Still, that means TAD down, right? He'll touch down on the ground, right? Field goal -- namely, removing the TAD -- achieved, right? Score for our side, right?

OUCH, I had forgotten that.

So ... he's now a puppet body made of meat?

I do hope this is not permadeath for Ebby. The whole point of RED is that destroying the brain alone is not a kill shot, but who knows what's next?

Anyway, maybe now they will ask questions first and shoot later.

Ouchoohdear.

Remind me, someone, where do Uniocs keep their brain? I think Ebby might be in a slightly worse state than Murtagh was when she got herself temporarily killed.

Must be nice to have precognition of the writer eh?

Seriously, what the frak? This THING would have to be a jedi or sith to have that sort of reflexes. Since not only would it have to be swinging before he said 'fire' it would have to somehow know the shooter's reflexes. And how fast his brain processes information into action.... ay yi yi

Screw talking to it, VAPE IT :schlock:

From this page I would say the following:
It knows where Unioc's keep their brains
It destroyed ebys brain on purpose
It does NOT know about RED.

Management does not take responsibility for death due to failing to remain clear of high energy devices and their products.

There's no reason to assume it doesn't know about RED. It could just as easily be happy with "expensive/destructive delaying tactic".

Damn, it's so easy to assume that all humanoids are built the same way, and "meh, head is intact" is exactly what I thought before you reminded me that uniocs don't keep brains in bony protrusions.
Hopefully that thing doesn't have ability to corrupt RED backups.

Yup, I spotted that and came to see if anyone else did. He's gonna need that RED backup.

Uniocs probably don't have terribly quick reactions, either, since their eyes are a fair ways from their brain. Ours are kept near our eyes because it makes for a short signal path, but for a Unioc, that signal has to go all the way down there.

I just thought of a sweet modification that the blood nannies could do, they could increase the speeds of neurons, from ~200 m/s (guess) to who knows what.

Anyway, a bit off topic, but we don't really have topics here. :tagonhappy:

Why assume it knows anything about Uniocs either? For most living beings, having a big hole shot through the middle like that is pretty fatal. It's only survivable in the Schockverse because of super-advanced trauma care - and even that has to be applied pretty quickly.

Soo, while we're at it... was it established that the modern RED works on non-humans too?

It has to be built for each species separately, but I'm pretty sure that's happened for all of the species in the Toughs.

I believe PD made sure it was available in a selection of species that just happen to be the same selection as Tagon's crew.

Yes, and? These are professional soldiers, if anyone has access to super-advanced trauima care, they will. Also, an observer that size, who even Petey wants to interrogate, I tend to assume they know stuff like that.

So those purple bits flying everywhere Ebby's...brain matter? I wonder if they can be saved and reincorporated somehow. And Schlock is in charge of Xeno team, for the moment at least.

I'm now picturing Schlock wrestling the Big Blob to recover bits of Ebby.

Eh, it's been established that death is cheap for the Toughs ever since it was shown that they could be reduced to a head in a bag and still come back as long as they got to appropriate medical care fast enough. The few times that someone has actually died it was because that medical care was not available in time or the head and brain were damaged or destroyed.

And that was before Laz'R'Us and RED. Now, the brain can be totally destroyed but the person can still be bought back, long as their RED backup survives. They'll just be missing their most recent memories, and who really wants to remember getting shot dead by a high-energy beam weapon anyway? Just hearing about it will probably be enough to make Ebby cringe.

Yeah, something similar was done in the Takashi Kovacs series. And then the author showed us that there is always a way of killing someone.

I really hope Ebby doesn't fall into the red goo. He is one of my favorites, and that would probably be the end of him.

Well - it said that they must destroy it completely. So blasting it would accomplish that.
Petey would be disappointed.

I just noticed - in
http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2008-02-05
"the Gatekeepers trace their roots back six million years"

hm - so that is the same time period as the last round of wars/extinction?

Those are brain noodles. Unless they're seasoned with RED, I think Mr. Ebbirnoth's just gone to that great big beach resort in the sky.

Look at him, sipping Mai-Thais in the afterlife, while the rest of his team gets on with the mission! Zee Captain will be most displeased!

So . . . is Ebbie now headed for a court-martial for getting himself killed?

Assuming the Toughs care about such things, of course.

Don't see why he would be. IIRC at one time the Royal Navy had a court-martial every time they lost a significant ship. This was because they had no other way to conduct a formal investigation or inquest, so they'd court-martial the senior surviving officer if there was no obvious screw-up as the way to conduct an after action investigation.

The Toughs just wrote a new procedures manual as a result of refining their AAR procedure. I doubt they've forgotten how to do an AAR and inquest and will suddenly go back to acting like the 18th century RN.

So you'd only Court-martial Ebbie if you thought he'd committed a court-martial offense. Which would be what?

In panel 2, there is a railing providing protection.
In panels 3-5, that protective railing is missing.

What happened? Inquiring minds want to know. So do I.
