Or he's just the stereotypical spark . . . things are only noticed if they interfere with his work.

He's not at that level . . . he hasn't built things in his sleep.

Yet.

Hey now, if there's a Spark in this strip, it's Kevyn.

Why do you assume there can be only one spark? That's a term for entire category of uniquely talented people, with wide range of "strenghts" of their talent, and wide range of chosen fields.

Deadly girlfriend gadget builder and tinkerer meets the 'spark' stereotype some, too.

As a freakishly good hacker who is somehow still employed after almost getting the entire company killed several times, Para definitely counts as a spark. So does Kevin, whose reality-bending jutsu kicked off several whole books of the comic. The guy with the headphones hasn't shown any ability to alter the laws of physics to suit his whims, he's just a really dedicated minion. And Elf is obviously Kevin's minion, attracted by his four-digit IQ score.

So, not hearing a full battle happening right behind him doesn't count as bending reality?

It's likely not so much "not hearing" as "not caring." He's decided that what he's doing is the only thing that can possibly be important right now, therefore anything else that may go on around him is just an annoying distraction to be pushed from his conscious awareness when possible, and yelled at with annoyance when not. He hasn't mentally processed what the nosie around him is, because that would require acknowledging that it's important enough to pay attention to. And "obviously" nothing can be more important than whatever he's working on.

Don't be so sure. Remember the part where she turned out to be able to cobble together surprisingly robust equipment without prior experience or formal education on the subject? Remember why she made that gear? a) she needed it, b) she wanted to show them all
Sounds like a minor spark.

As for Gasca, you might be right. He talks a lot about doing this or that "FOR SCIENCE!" but so far, that's it.

No. In the world of Mad Science ignoring anything that isn't important only to then deflect/evade threats without interrupting work is a standard practice for anyone who isn't a red-shirt bound to die within 5 minutes.

Ignoring a battle going on around him doesn't make Gasca brilliant, it makes him single-minded. Stupidly so, since a stray plasma bolt or microwave beam could take him out at any moment, Not to mention any Esspie-mech that gets past the defenders.

I suppose he's high up enough to afford a Bose headset for his work computer.

On the other hand, mad scientists, that is, people who have that certain spark, are known for exactly that kind of behavior. You don't have to be brilliant to be a spark. Some make giant death rays and mount them on deathbots, while others, others make pie.

Where else do you get a decent active noise-canceling headset? I can only find passive ones, and those rely on suffocating your ears in a bunch of padding.

I've used Sennheiser, Logitech, Able Planet, and something else I can't remember right now. The Logitech's were the lesser, but also the cheaper. But they all did well with stuff like airliner and vacuum pump noise.

And all of them make trouble of one kind or another.

Othar Trygvason, Gentleman Adventurer, OTOH, is in a class of his own as a troublemaker.

Others will make everything except a functioning weapon, only to have their kingdoms taken over by a war-mongering female...

(where was that special/short again?)
