Aaaaand it looks like they just kamakazied into Bacchus.

Though knowing Howard, (1) looks can be, and are, deceiving, (2) that clicking sound you hear is, indeed, being made by Chekov, and (3) the plot's going to have more twists and turns than Bacchus' orbit.

I think repair guys in this universe are just contractually obliged to make snarky comments instead of being anguished or shocked at instantaneous apparent loss of life.

I think there's one of two things going on here;

1) The repair guys just don't care about the loss of life, it's Not Their Problem. They're more concerned about the machinery that just got destroyed.

2) They're seeing the action through sensor readouts on a screen. It takes a minute for them to realize that someone (maybe several someones) probably just died.

Either way, the result is the snarky comments you see in the final panel, which is good for the joke.

I mean, we could get an "OH MY GOD THEY JUST CRASHED THIS IS HORRIBLE THNK OF THE CHILDREN OH THE HUMANITY" response, but... it kind of wouldn't fit the tone of this comic.

Emergency professionals must remain calm, collected and structured during tragedy.

This and the stress tends to result in an attitude that at least can be seen as unfeeling and also in inappropriate humor.

If they do not have this mechanism available, they either go insane or burn out very rapidly.

The smart policy is to keep them away from easily shocked civilians.
