Okay, so I was wrong. It wasn't Breya, it was fleet brass.

Why stop at ships with long guns on them? Why not block anybody who has a long gun anywhere? Or anybody who knows anybody with a long gun anywhere? Or anybody who might know anybody who knows anybody... You see where this is going.

It's gotta be more than that. Keeping out the Long Guns doesn't protect you from them. You have to keep anything that might spot for them out.

Unless the fear is that the presence of a Long Gun vessel in system will result in that system being targeted for a pre-emptive strike from another power.

Just tell Breya to politely tell the brass that they don't use any ships with long guns, because they don't need to - anyone with a handbrain can call in a strike from across the galaxy anyways. that should calm them down.

Isn't the point of having a long gun that you DON'T bring it to a fight, you only bring the ammo at high velocity?

Keeping out ships armed with long guns accomplishes exactly nothing. This is clearly not a policy that was passed based around rational thought and careful planning. This is a panicked reaction policy. Someone said "OMG THESE LONG GUNS ARE TERRIBLE WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING™!!!11!1!!" And so someone quickly tossed this policy on the table to make it look like they were Doing Something™ about the long guns, and everyone approved it because they didn't want to seem to be getting in the way of Doing Something™ about the long guns, and here we are. The actual effectiveness of the policy is completely irrelevent: all that matters is that the people making the policies look like they're trying to defend against the long guns.

That's my guess.

Or it's a political move by enemies of the Toughs/Petey/The Neofans. Or enemies of the UNS, after all if you can chill relations between allies, than those allies won't be as fast to respond if called upon.

I think maybe you guys are forgetting how reactionary, illogical and stupid people actually are.

The bigger problem here is that "might be long gun capable" implies that there are more of them out there.

The secret is swiftly not becoming a secret and that's going to lead to end of civilisation again.

Interesting that long guns are the reason given for the ban, but yet the ban is still valuable. As the Cindercone proved, the Oafan hulls do bring a significant threat into the solar system. The ability to overhwhelm local defenses via terraport cage insertion.
That this ship is equipped with neither a long gun nor a massive, near-invisible terraport cage is somewhat irrelevant.

However, who wants to speculate that Tagons' new main gun will get a similar nod as possibly being a long gun?

You think there's panic now? Wait 'till the Admiralty gains even a basic understanding of how the Long Guns really work. About how anyone with a handbrain can spot for a gun that doesn't have to be anywhere near the target system. We may be seeing the beginning of the end of galactic civilization here folks.

There also the matter than the oafan tech brought these unknowns, so what else might they be hiding? Better to ban the lot of them to be safe.

So, the Long Guns might end civilization for the umpteenth time.. while barely ever being used? People's fear tearing everything apart far more effectively than any perceived threat?

If so, how... depressing.

And now we're caught up, though the Admiralty hasn't.
