Why do we even *have* that lever?

I wonder what speech is she writing? Is it about the long-guns, or is it irrelevant?

Archimedes also needed a place to stand.

That's why loggers are superior to geometers: To move the world, a logger just needs enough rigging and a tie-back.

Well, her last speech was about the need for a new world (solar?) order, so I think Archimedes Lever could be an apt metaphor.

Or it could be a nod to this sword.

If Breya is worried about any swords, she's probably worried about this one.

It's a standard in fortress design. The lever to flood the fortress with magma always goes next to the one for opening the drawbridge or something else commonly used. Of course, dorfs aren't known for labeling things.

Do you want to be defeated by the Hero or Heroine? Because that's how you get defeated by the Hero or Heroine!

This kind of nonsense can easily be corrected by reading (and adhering to) proper building codes, the ISO 90000 labeling requirements, and the Evil Overlord list.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/L ... atmurdered

That was reference to Boatmurdered, a Dwarf Fortress succession game.

Dwarf Fortress is a game where you manage titular Dwarf Fortress, making sure your dwarves have alcohol and food (in this order of importance), and lead happy and productive lives. Your reign is punctuated by goblin invasions, megafauna attacks, murderous carps, creation of abominable sanity-stealing relics, murderous rampages of sad dwarves, breeding merfolk to harvest their bones, cpu-melting catsplosions, building lava powered forges, building automated self-resetting lava traps, lava powered defenses, lava powered computers, lava powered defenses controlled by lava powered computers... Finally, if you dig too deep, you can be conquered by hell, or you can conquer hell, if you are Dwarf enough.

But most importantly, the lava-powered "fuck it all"/self destruct/FUN lever, that almost inevitably gets pulled by "accident".

Or to quote another long running webcomic: "It's a feature"

You know I've never actually flooded a fortress with lava, but I have built lava pumps. And I have built levers that I forgot the function of. So it is a feature. It's just a feature you forgot about.

I did. Once. By accident. You learn from the FUN.

Either how to do it on command or how to avoid it.

Except for flooding by water. I always seem to forget one of the many ways this can happen and screw up every 3rd or 4th fortress and end up flooding some portion that was not meant to be flooded.

Heh, I recognize that reference.
Quote:
Boatmurdered
Update: mining out random areas
Oh god my miner did something and there's water everywhere outside my fortress! If I don't do anything, the fortress will be flooded!
Obviously I must evaporate the water with lava before it gets inside *pulls lever*

Some comedy picture threads on DF... note game does not look like these cartoons. These are however indicative of game play... kinda.

Two more comedy threads:

A pair of Tutorials:

This one is often touted, but it's really outdated (still good for the basics though)
https://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/09/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-1-wtf/

But I prefer Captain Duck's video tutorials:

And of course Boatmurdered, the most infamous game of Dwarf Fortress ever played:
