Is it just me, or does that last panel look like the whole mountain is the living creature?

I mean, it's like I can see the face, eyes, mouth, etc.

Or have I just watched too much of The Trash Heap years ago?

I don't understand? The words are in English but the sentence makes no sense? Too much Madame Trash Heap? Unpossible.

The next book's name is pretty ominous. To quote the final maxim:

"Failure isn’t an option. It’s mandatory.
The option is whether or not to let
failure be the last thing you do."

Sounds like after things went pretty well for the Toughs, it's time for a massive setback.

Well, they're due. This book went pretty easy on them--the stakes weren't really that high, and they've met a new character who looks like he's going to be a major player. Next book, they're likely going to get kicked in the teeth at least once.

You mean, apart from that whole "There may be a really powerful entity out there who may want to trigger the collapse of civilization" thing? But yeah, it didn't feel quite as threatening as that.

Petey is going to fail. The Andromeda war is going to rear its ugly head

If Petey fails it'll be the end of all non-Pa'anuri life in the Schlockiverse. In other words, goodbye Schlock, Tagon, Tagon's Toughs, and just about everyone else.

Howard wouldn't be the first creator to end his series with the death of all his characters, but I'd hope he'd have a happier ending than that in mind.

I've had times when I felt like doing that to the party.

We had a brisk little war going between the two players for the rest of the campaign. (Both players were really annoying. Eventually we were able to schedule games at a time neither could attend.)

I thought I read something about how the story of the Toughs was heading to a conclusion, which may or may not include all of them dying, but that Howard still had plans for other stories in the setting. Which would kind of preclude everyone dying.

My personal take is that given the way the Toughs are headed they are moving towards dealing with the cycle of galactic extinction events, or at least one variation of it. They may not all survive, but they probably won't all die either, especially with Red-Reo. It's just that after that story is told they'll be rich, immortal, and any other story about them would be anticlimactic. So Howard would be moving on to other characters.

I'm still hoping for Schlock Suicide Squad, aka "everyone who got shipped off to Space Australia". I don't think groups get more dysfunctional than by including Xinchub, Ceeta, Damico and Kowalski.
