This is a prime example of why the 15 m/s default setting for the TOE cages is a stupid one. It makes implicit assumptions about the conditions under which the cage is going to be used, and if you're entering a secured area, you don't want to just barrel into it.

And what happens when you're extracting someone who doesn't have magical protection from ultra high G maneuvers (crashing into a floor/wall/person at 30+ miles per hour)? Someone is eventually going to get killed because of the stupid setting.

I'm confused about the geometry.
Shouldn't Corporal Gugro have been folded legs-backwards instead of -forwards upon contact with the floor?

Could have rolled a few times and ended up like that.

The setting is stupid. That apparently nobody is being informed about the setting is 'elf is banned from engineering' levels of stupid.

Principle of Least Astonishment is important. The gun should not shoot backwards.

That's how I'm picturing it too.

And while I'll totally admit I did laugh, I do feel sorry for Peri.

Of all the people who -should- have been sympathetic and warned her about that next step, you'd think it would have been Flinders there.

For those of you in the USA, that's 33 mph!

No one can stay upright at that speed.

Exit velocity really needs to be adjustable, or at least toggleable.
Also, good job... eee... how exactly should we address this hive node? Is Ot-Skadak a name for all of them, or it refers only to warriors?

I'd say put a great big sign on the top of the gate saying "Your Exit: 80Kph ahead!"
And a great big "slow exit" button on the side.

It may or may not depend on what kind of boosts they've got.
Nick and Shep (at one point at least) look like they could hit something close to that speed, and choose not to crush things on the receiving end. The Reverend even could stick something in the eye.

Also, for context, Usain Bolt runs at approx 28 mph, which comes at about 12 m/s.

30-35mph is right around the sharp inflection point where people get significantly more likely to die from injuries received in pedestrian to vehicle contact. (Jumping from ~1% up to ~10% or so over the previous 5mph speed band for children and healthy adults and hitting up to 90% for the elderly)

I don't really see how a roll is going to reverse the angular momentum from feet towards-back into feet towards face.

Does that suit have a flight system that could have been given panicky confused commands?

As someone who has done that roll, at about 30mph, I can tell you that you Peri's position is completely believable, and is probably the only position she could end up in without major injury.

(Her physiology is close enough to human that I feel confidant saying that.)

[edit] Let me unpack that a little bit. What I do in that situation is, I tuck up my arms and legs into a ball, protecting my soft bits and preparing myself for impact. In that position, when I hit the impact will start me tumbling, turning forward momentum into angular momentum. I then open my arms and legs as best I can, going from ball shape to wheel shape, decreasing my angular velocity.

That position is Peri uncurling from that kind of roll.

"Bugsy"

Pretend they have British accents

That might work. Hive most likely has a Queen, just like Britons do.

Now I'm imagining all Bugsby units as having thick formal Oxford accents...
