The captain seems to be reaching his limit.

He knows that he is in way over his head, and through no fault of his own. Wrong place, wrong time, and all that.

Okay, I'm beginning to accept that Kaepu might just be a 'good' guy after all.

Because he's on the verge of totally losing it?

He seems remarkably composed for having just discovered Tarpaulin behind him. :-)

Happy to do the right thing when it's easy or convenient (easy in terms of choices, not difficulty of work itself, as for convenience, I'm assuming that he's either contracted to save the dead, or in some other way it's his job, he doesn't seem dedicated enough to be volunteer nor professional with a calling) but would rather run away as soon as danger arises?

Doesn't strike me as "good", more of a "spineless neutral". Problem with this alignment is that it's prevalence allows genuine evil a lot of leeway.

The mercenaries may get him killed, but he knows they won't be the ones doing the killing.

I bet you'd avoid near-suicide too. He was trying to run a rescue operation, not camp in a war zone. That's not "spineless," that's sane.

Absolutely. I work in Telecom. I used to be an outside lineman hanging cable at times.
Just because I -can- hang wire in adverse conditions, doesn't mean I want to hang cable in places like Somalia or Syria when there's a very very good chance the xenophobic asshole warlords (who may or may not also be the local goverment) are going to be shooting at me while I do it. And that goes especially for my boss whos job includes keeping my ass safe.

Kaepu may not be gung-ho, mercenary captain brave, but he's also doing his job. And if I"m reading internal politics right there, just -having- foreingers, esp a Fo'bottr is already hanging his bits out there.
