By the end of the book, I expect Schlock to be a pro at using the frag suit, even if it's giving him trouble right now.

Wouldn't it be more interesting if this was one thing Schlock just couldn't do? As an amorph he is so much better than everyone else in the company in so many ways, there's a lot of potential for a story where that isn't the case.

Like walking on two legs?

Such as all the times he's failed to understand emotional cues and the emotional/psychological needs of others?

As mentioned in the other thread if anything I would expect him to be better at piloting this armor than any of the other grunts. He's already used to having multiple eyes. And then using those eye connections to drive his old armor. This is just a step up from that.

Others have said it, but part of the problem is that amorphs want to be WHOLE. It's a (for lack of a better term) "biological" imperative. He couldnt stop himself from 'eating' mini-Schlock simply because he was identified as a 'wayward clump of himself'.

It's going against every instinct he has to release parts of 'himself'. Little clumps of memory are one thing, but this is splitting himself into other sections.

Keep in mind also, that when he separates, he has no direct control over the bits of himself he leaves behind. There's a central 'Schlockiousness' somehow. He doesn't make copies of himself.

Controlling the armor bits is thus not only going against every instinct he has that emphasizes 'wholeness' but is also like cutting off your hand and expecting it to keep doing what you want it to.

Solids have an easier time of that because they aren't constantly being urged to maintain cohesion, to REMAIN solid. And we honestly DO expect our limbs to keep doing what we think they should even when they've been lopped off. We have such an extreme 'belief' that all our bits are always there and will always do as they're told that we can still feel them even though we obviously CAN'T.

Schlock probably has a hell of a time using remote controls and telepresence systems. He doesn't have the baked in surety that doing this will equal the same thing happening somewhere else just because we say it will.

We solids are egocentric like that.

True I suppose there might be some psychological hurdles for him to overcome. But he's still got a better interface for working with his armor than anyone who isn't a cyborg.
