They've narrowed it down to somewhere between 3680 and Graham's number. Now that they know how many she has they just have to disable every single one of them simultainiously. Should be pretty straightforward at this point.

At a certain number of identical enemy combatants, them being all the same means you don't need to worry about finding them and do need to worry about finding the way to turn them all off at once.

Why would they be all the same? If she was paranoid enough to want 8,200 of them, she certainly could vary the hardware and software involved.

Would those ships have the autowipe routine? Maybe the gusts are unaltered and trying to figure out what is happening to the primary AI (without drawing its ire).

You know that's something I hadn't considered. It might explain why Chinook hasn't just wiped out Petey if she only has a couple dozen long guns under local control rather than thousands.

Maybe the sights are jiggling themselves?
