I think they should be concerned about being what appears to be the only Annie plant in the area.

Looks like Petey may have evacuated his population wholesale to protect them from the Pa'anuri attacks. Wonder why the Toughs weren't briefed before they tried to come there, though.

Agreed, and good question.
(He was probably in a Big Hurry, but AIs can multi-task, and fork off sub-processes, much better than us meat-glaciers.)

Or, you know, maybe he failed to.

Maybe we'll see a flashback as to what happened? :-)

Also, that little 4-strip in the middle: I'm realizing that while we read left to right, and as much as cartoons are usually drawn with "the future" off to the right, here the ship is departing to the left.

Para and Petey need to have some dialog together. Just because.

That would, IMO, tend to leave more visible debris.
(Whether that debris should, accurately, be visible to us at these ranges is mooted by long-standing convention.)

Unless the Pa'anuri were so thorough that the debris field is only visible with some type of electron microscope.

If they were that thorough, we would have cloud of metallic gas. Clouds of gas are fairly easy to spot and even easier to identify by absorption lines.

Well, there IS an odd looking pink cloud right in the middle of everything.

They would also look a whole lot like the aftermath of a space battle. Especially to someone who makes a career of fighting battles, sometimes in space.

Well, they did get one hit within seconds of Petey realizing that he'd have to hide the cities better, so there should be one cloud of debris unless he tidied up during the evacuation.

I'm starting to see a shape for the new civilization. Ships, with large annie plants, constantly random-walking, for power, and cities, hidden around enclosed stars, connected to those ships by terraport cages for transfer of power, (in the form of sufficiently energetic batteries or synthesized fuel,) and personnel.
Put a filter on those terraport cages to plug any small annie plants heading to the hidden cities, in the way we've seen done by Haban back in Doyt's bounty hunter days, and by the Shoemaker-Levy just a few strips back.

Maybe a few pretty places, like the can of sky, or a few un-urbanized planets, for parks.
Or, for that matter, wrap your stellar enclosure around the dwarf component of a binary star, and habiform the surface to a nice earth-like green and blue.
But do that only if you trust everyone who might go topside not to report your position to your enemies by doing something stupid...like taking a picture of the night sky.
(Heck, wrap your stellar enclosure around the dwarf component of a binary star, anyway, even if you don't make the surface earthlike. The mass of the larger star should help mask the gravity of your smaller structure, and help keep it from being tripped over by someone doing a gravitational object census.)

Edit. It's always possible that A. this is another planet than the one THAT city was tethered to, even in the same star system, or just close by, and B. that THAT city WAS on the dark side of THIS planet. If the city was essentially in orbit, then the debris cloud should take at least a few days to wrap around the planet.
Also, it is likely that Petey did pick up the pieces. There should still be a few survivors, or Laz-1 corpses, in that mix. Better to port them away from all the radiation of the core, though, and sort through them in the inter-stellar black.

Too bad they can't figure out a way to set up counterbattery traps . . . you fire on a juicy target, and other long guns destroy your long gun.

In this case (firing from Andromeda) that would be a little (lot) difficult, but the principle should work.

...I think the residents of the cities all have seasickness now
