Quite a few failures here that we might say this brushes against...

  • failure to prevent scouting of the secret weapon by enemy forces.
  • Failure to prevent (non-hostile) foreign powers from scouting the secret weapon
  • failure to detect the scouting of the secret weapon
  • Failure to protect your secret weapon as well as a foreign power protects your secret weapon.
  • Failure (possibly) to want to chose the morally correct or stragically correct course
  • Failure of the secret weapon to hold up to a long gun attack.

You’re doing something very wrong if foreign powers are better equipped to protect your secret stuff than you are.

To be fair, it's not hard to fail to build a secret weapon that holds up to long gun attack. The problem of "If someone has your targeting information and a long gun, they can kill you at any time" is a problem that multiple civilisations INCLUDING Petey has failed to solve.

You might as well say Petey's failed big time, too:

• failure to prevent scouting of the city of Pachylia Darceta by enemy forces.
• Failure to prevent (non-hostile) foreign powers from scouting the city of Pachylia Darceta
• failure to detect the scouting of the city of Pachylia Darceta
• Failure of the city of Pachylia Darceta to hold up to a long gun attack.

All those resulted in three hundred thousand people being laz-fived (which also could have been prevented with a more thorough backup system).

Just the first four points alone are likely to cost that admiral his job. I'll be very surprised if we see him again after he gets cashiered out of the service.

That's assuming that Murtaugh can't strike twice.
Lightning... I meant lightning can't strike twice.

Or Ventura, or Flinders, or Nichsolson...

He's probably not the person who failed. Keeping hostile targeting sensors more than 17 light-minutes from Jupiter is the responsibility of system security in general. At most he's on the hook for keeping it inside Jupiter, but it is reasonable to judge that Sol's defenses outweighed the risk. Particularly as there are many hostile powers that have considerable fleets but no long guns as of yet; them capturing the station would be worse than it being destroyed by long gun fire.

The admiral's the one who lost the base though; for a loss that big, someone's head will roll. And it'll usually be the head of the one in charge of it.

Depends on how important he was to get put in charge of a UNS secret weapon in the first place. It certainly isn't going to look good on his record, but he might keep his job if not his rank.
