16 weeks of training: The last 16 weeks on ship :-).

The test: Knowing the rules.

There is one more test, but it's one Karl and Murtaugh have to pass.

The test is "how do we keep press-ganging her without her realizing she can just quit because she's being forced into a role she has no desire to have?'

"No desire" is going too far. She's just afraid, mainly that she's inadequate for the role.

She's doing everything she can to tell them she isn't up for it short of just plain telling them NO. She joined as a chef - by accident at that! And quite clearly does not want to advance from that. She's just being POLITE about it.

She is inadequate for the role, and she knows it. Officers in this company serve as leaders and commanders, and she has zero training on how to do that. She is not capable of performing the job of a lieutenant in this company, and she is completely aware of that. Also, she doesn't want the job.

Counter-examples: Dr. Bunnigus, Reverend Fobius, Ventura (until Oisri), Massey.

When she's the only one the group can trust to know about the whole "another galaxy is out to kill us" thing, has a contract with a firm that is ordered to repay damages, and is literally needing to help save the galaxy, she's probably going to realise while she's in over her head, there's no-one that she can switch out with effectively.

-I mean, Petey could probably hire someone. He's got enough money to hire accountants to account for his accountants that are accounting for his accountants. But just Petey hiring people doesn't really have the same flavour to the webcomic.

And if Petey hires someone, there are issues . . . starting with petey-dependency, the possibility of personality conflicts, getting the newb up to speed, security issues with the newb . . . the list goes on and on.

Counter-counter examples: Bunni leads and commands the medical team, the Rev has commanded and led before, quite capably despite his inexperience, Massey became chief justice of an entire colony, and Ventura was chief roboticist and commanded a legion of robots.

And? They're still technical specialists with officer ranks, quite distinct from line officers such as Shodan, Elf, Ebbirnoth, Brad, etc., and similar in concept to the newly-minted Lieutenant Lefevre.

And and? What makes Lefevre not a viable technical specialist herself? The already admitted they wanted her as a tactics advisor.

Not sure if it counts as a counter counter example...

There was that time that never happened, where the Rev was given a commmission and had troops to lead...
