So, in his movie review list, Howard says that Avengers: Infinity Wars is the middle of a film arc / serial sequence.

OK. What was the predecessor to it?

And, since this seems to be critical now, what's the proper order to see the various Marvel films in?

I hope Para never plays with Tenzy. The result would be terrifying.
Para and Petey need to have some dialog together. Just because.

It depends on who you listen to and when, but at one point there were only going to be 3 'phases' of movies. I have no idea how many they're planing on making now. Probably as many as they can until the audience is completely burned out on Marvel movies.

All the MCU movies that came out before it. :|

The order they came out in (Antman and Wasp is during Infinity War). What is your google broken?

And before it goes any further: Wesley Snipes in yet another Blade movie? Worst decision Marvel could make.

Thor: Ragnarok is the most direct predecessor. The final after-credits scene of Ragnarok leads right into the opening sequence of Infinity War.

Indirectly, the plot threads of the other heroes of Infinity War pick up roughly where they ended in the other Phase 3 movies (see evileeyore's link).

Alright, a more directed response:

The movies you need to see to have an understanding about the characters and the overall situation, in this order:

Iron Man (2008)
The Incredible Hulk (2008)*
Thor (2011)
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Marvel's The Avengers (2012)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Doctor Strange (2016)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Black Panther (2018)

And yeah, Captain America is probably the most important character, followed closely by Tony Stark. If you want understand all the nuance and references, watch all the movies in order as they appear on the wiki page I linked above (though I'd swap around Black Panther and Thor: Ragnarok just because Infinity War literally picks up where Thor: Rag ends).

For further tidbits and niftiness, also hunt down all the Marvel One-Shots and watch the post-credits scenes.

* Note this movie stars Edward Norton rather than Mark Ruffalo. Also, it can be skipped... I mean who doesn't understand who the Hulk is and how the Hulk operates?
