So how does a grunt get out of military service now?

Para and Petey need to have some dialog together. Just because.

Huh. You'd think an analyst would research her company's history and know their actual traditions better...

On the one hand, yes. On the other hand, she joined pretty recently and I don't think anyone's left the Toughs since before she joined up - and she wasn't in a position where she'd be required to know anything about those traditions until the other day, assuming it's even been that long. She's had a lot of other stuff on her plate, researching "how do the Toughs deal with people leaving" was probably somewhere near the bottom of her priority list.

Without that knowledge, it's not unreasonable to assume that most Toughs only 'retired' on death - and for most of the company's history, that was probably true. Everyone we know of who retired only did so after they'd gotten paid enough that they could bank aside a few years' of expenses and, presumably, look for a less-dangerous line of work in the meantime.

Actually, everyone with a name who retired did so for reasons other than "Well padded savings".

Two did so for romantic prospects (Shep and Nick), one to spare the Toughs the danger of him being aboard (Der Trihs), one because there were two of him (Kevin Prime), and the last to pursue interesting work (Vog).

However, one of her first interactions with the toughs was when they visited Shep, and she knew Nick before he was fired, and after, and after he ended up walking back into the Toughs as a cook.
Edit, one of Kathryn's first interactions...
