Quote:
Lt.-Gen. James Mattis said: "Actually, it's a lot of fun to fight. You know, it's a hell of a hoot...It's fun to shoot some people."

I can understand that. Sometimes dropping 500 pound bombs on 'em loses it's thrill and you just have to get down on the ground and shoot somebody in the head.

Quote:
Gen. Mike Hagee, commandant of the Marine Corps, issued a statement saying: "Lt.-Gen. Mattis often speaks with a great deal of candour. I have counselled him concerning his remarks and he agrees he should have chosen his words more carefully."

So... the USMC Commandant wants his officers to be less open and honest?

The thing of it is, he was not told that the thoughts were wrong, or that he should apologize. He was asked to think before speaking, and choose his words more carefully. He was certainly not asked to lie, just be more selective in his word choice.

I think that a USMC General thinking that killing scum of the earth foes of our nation in wartime is fun is a good thing, personally.

I couldn't agree more. Killing people is fun. You're number one on my list.

Foes of our nation are the scum of the Earth?

Jingoistic much?

Some certainly are. The people he was referring to are both.

Precisely - the Marine General was referring to wife-beating abusive bastiches who happened to be foes of our nation and our society as a whole. We aren't talking about people who are defending their country here - we are talking about rapists, murderers, and thugs.

There is a difference.

Except mostly you're shooting people who are their your countries. Unless it's Marine SOP to investigate for weeks about the guys shooting them to see if they happen to be criminals. And, while they're at it, do the same about the civillians not shooting them, in case they're wife beaters - shooting them would then be fun and safe.

Don't flatter yourself.
Killing people is illegal at best, immoral under any sane persons rules. I only kill people when it's really important. Neither of you qualify.
I was trying to make a point, which both of you appear to have missed.
Oh well. If a USMC Lt.Gen. doesn't get it, and the commandant of the USMC doesn't get it, why should I expect you to get it?

I wasn't, I was mocking myself. I can't explain how, because I lack to ability to put it clearly into words. Sorry about the waste of bandwidth.

You seem to be saying that it is even immoral in genuine cases of self defense. Is that what you meant to say?

Fair enough.

Pronto wrote:

That's good to know.

I am genuinely curious what you intended to communicate with a death threat.

The only thing I can think of is that you were trying to make deranged dm consider the possibility that other people might think that he is a "scum of the Earth foe of thier nation". Which would mean that if deranged dm is saying that placing that label on someone makes killing them morally acceptable then deranged dm is setting up a situation where he would be condoning his own murder.

Was that your point?

That violent death seems a lot less casual when aimed at you, perhaps.

Or maybe that a bloody sociopath that gets his jollies off of firing into a twitching corpse of a fellow human being is not really the ideal soldier.

Aye, both are good possibilities, and are a bit less convoluted than my guess.

Unfortunately we still don't know if Pronto's point was one of those or if he was trying to communicate something else entirely.
