*sigh* If not for that a-hole US Senator William Proxmire, we probably would've had a moonbase and permanent space station since the late 1970's. Might even have sent people to Mars already.
Instead the Apollo program was ended early, Spacelab was designed to be used for only three crews and Apollo-Soyuz was a political stunt instead of a move towards international cooperation in space.
Edit: Spacelab = Skylab. Who else remembers when it came down? And the large ugly chunk of it they had on display at that year's Miss America pageant?
