Okay, so it probably won't make a zapping noise. Still, it's pretty cool. Basically, the Earth is gettin pelted with a huge wad of ions from a plasma geyser on the sun. Might make some nice fireworks.

Last Thursday night, while visiting my parents in Hamilton, Ontario, I saw the most incredibly luminous red aurora with some almost indistinguishable green-blue curtains further north. It lasted for half an hour or so, directly overhead, and easily overpowered the (rather terrible) local light pollution. On the way back I stopped off in the countryside to see if I could see some more, but despite standing around for 1/2 hour or so, but found nothing except to note that night vision really does work when there's no city lights around.

That solar storm finally granted my mother one of her wishes: to see some Northern Lights.

Why are canines called canines when feline canines are bigger than canine canines?

Nice. In Boston we didn't get much; just a very faint green haze. The light pollution here is even worse. But yeah, I did see something anyway. Now I want to see more. :)
