To avoid spoiling it for folks who haven't read the puzzle yet, please post your solutions and discussions in this thread.

The Case of the Body by the Garage

The bulb hung directly above the upturned hood of a white sports car. Through the open garage doors the dim yellow light reached into the night and illuminated the body of a man dressed in oil-splotched loafers, greasy wool shirt, and dirty blue jeans.

He might have been slumbering, except that his head was avagely crushed in.

"Roger Pratt, the socialite playboy," said Inspector Winters. "Mrs. Pratt's nurse saw the whole thing. It was she who summoned the police."

Inside the house, Bertha Tone, the nurse, repeated her story for Dr. Haledjian.

"I was with Mrs. Pratt all night. Mr. Pratt said she was not to be left alone. She's been very ill.
"About midnight, I glanced through the bedroom window and saw Mr. Pratt step out of the garage. A woman slipped from behind those bushes and struck him with some instrument over the head."

"Didn't Mr. Pratt notice his assailant's approach?"

"It all happened too swiftly. As Mr. Pratt stooped to tie his shoelaces, the woman darted up behind him. I don't think he saw or heard her. I immediately called the police from the telephone in the bedroom."

"You didn't leave the house tonight?"

"No," replied the nurse, stiffening.

The nurse's statement was confirmed by Mrs. Pratt. "Bertha made a telephone call about midnight. Whispered so I couldn't hear! Otherwise she didn't leave me. What's the girl been up to?"

"She went downstairs to open the door for Inspector Winters and me," said Haledjian. "And she's been up to murder!"

What was wrong with the nurse's story?
