What is Self-awareness?

No circular definitions allowed.

Subject is aware that it's an individual and has the ability to differentiate between itself and others. Part of that would probably include a good understanding of its own properties/capabilities and its (soft/wet)ware.

More importantly, ability to make decisions based on these understandings would be a good indicator.

Ah, semantic masturbation, the cornerstone of philosophy.

Most of life is one kind of masturbation or another.

You can make a machine whose only purpose is to laugh at random intervals. Doesn't work.

I have never heard a machine laugh with a good joke, must be me. Or those random intervals.

Doesn't mean that one can't be made. For that matter, you having never heard one doesn't mean it can't already exist.

And good jokes are subjective. I've found that old saw, "You can tell a man's character by what he laughs at," to be very true. What's funny depends on who's observing.

Or who's being observed.

Technically, he didn't.

New policy: Nobody places cameras in my apartment. And you should be charging Jer at least double, since I've hired a guard fish who's pretty mean with an MP5.

I fail to see how you can avoid a circular definition of a phrase like 'self aware'.

Heh, see the dictionary definition:
Code:
 self-aware
adj : aware of yourself as an individual or of your own being and
             actions and thoughts; "self-conscious awareness";
"self-conscious about their roles as guardians of the
             social values"- D.M.Potter [syn: self-conscious]

What about the concept is unclear, Gerald? If you're trying to find a line at which one can seperate what is/isn't self-aware, I don't think you will. This, like many philisophical notions, seems a "Know It When You See It" thing.

Sort of like pornography.

I'm more of wondering if the thing actually exists, and it might just be a term that we say exists cause it makes warm and fuzzy feelings.

Similiar to free-will and souls.

Self awareness: the ability to have warm and fuzzy feelings.

Are definitions the place to look? We can clearly define both of those, and their existence is debatable.
