The world of fiction has a language of it's own when identifying stories. Here are a few terms you may come across:

Fanfiction: An original story based on an established idea. Didn't like the way a movie or novel ended? Write your own ending!

Lemon: Explicit sexual content. Not to be read by people under the age of 18. Basically, it has a porn scene. All posters in this forum MUST identify their story as a lemon if it includes graphic depictions of sex.

Lime: Semi-explicit sexual content. Getting to "second base" (petting up top) rather than going all the way. An R-rated movie might contain some lime content. All posters in this forum MUST identify their story as a Lime if this applys.

WAFF: Warm And Fuzzy Feeling. Romantic, leaves the reader feeling happy for the characters. Usuallly not sexual in nature (heavy duty kissing rather than foreplay). Not necessary to label a fiction as WAFF, but some people like them (like me :D ) and this would make them easier to find.

[letter or name]x[letter or name]: Matchups. Sometimes in fanfiction, there are many differnet romantic matchups that an author may want to write, sometimes one that was completely different from the one the original writer intended. Putting the names of the characters (or their first initial) together with an 'x' between them signifies what the matchup is going to be.

AU: Alternate Universe. Characters are the same, but the story is different. Usually an aspect of the original story is changed, and then it is retold with the new information.

Divergence: Most of the story is the same as the original up to a point, then the author takes over. Alternate endings would fall under this category.

Oneshot: A short fic, usually one chapter in length.

Spamfic: A really short fic. Often less than 1000 words. Usually leads to a joke of some kind.

Slash: Homosexual erotica.

Yuri: Lesbian scenes, usually of a graphic nature. Term usually used in anime fanfiction, as "yuri" translates to "lily" in Japanese.

Yaoi: Gay men scenes, usually of a graphic nature. Term usually used in anime fanfiction. Not sure what the translation means, but the best guess I've seen is that it's an ackronym for "YAmete! Oshiri ga Itai!" which translates to "Stop it! My butt hurts!" :D

If you have any more questions concerning terminology or the like, post them here, and I'll answer them to the best of my abilities.

I would not minded people refrained from just giving the first letter of the character when talking about couples. In sites dedicated to fanfiction where the stories are section off into and their categories people searching the category know the characters well. For a forum such as this though I doubt people will recognize characters by the first initial straightaway.

Well, it's strictly optional. Sometimes I like to see it (if it's a matchup I'd rather not read), but sometimes I don't because it sorta acts as a spoiler. It's basically telling who's going to get together in the end. Sometimes a little suspence can go a long way.

Please to add "Slash" to that list...Even though that normally falls under Lemon / Lime, sometimes it goes...further...than that.

Have you considered a warning for excessive violence in addition to the lemon/lime warnings? I'm talking about the really gory stuff that shows up in some of the fics.

I'm afraid I don't know the term. Is that blood and gore?

Yes. It is on the rules thread that it must posted in the title if it includes a lot of violence.

Slash = homosexual erotica, I think. Usually male-male. The name comes from the forward slash used to separate the names of the participants.

e.g. Walky/Jason/Dave/Mike/Bart

Thanks Neil, I put it in. I also put in Yaoi and Yuri for those here who don't watch anime/read manga.

You realize that slash and yaoi mean basically the same thing, right?

Yes I do, but I had never run into the term "slash" before. I had however, run into the term yaoi (you wouldn't believe the number of NarutoxSauske yaoi stories on fanfiction.net. It's scary), so I felt it would be a good idea to list both terms.

Maveric, I hope you understand, and if you don't, I'll say it now...Just HOW MUCH I loathe Fuckmyfiction.net.

I hate it. Those who created it need to burn in firey hell. It's not a nice place. It's someplace that I do NOT want this place to become.

Savvy?

Hey fine by me. I have some problems with it as well, but that's not going to stop me from posting there or reading stories posted there. I wasn't anticipating this becoming anything like that in the first place.

Y'know, it's funny. I always figured 'slash' was just fiction where a character died, like in 'slash their name off the list'. Or a 'slasher' film.

...now I'm really hesitant about ever seeing one of those movies if it's just a guy running around doing other guys wearing that 'Scream' mask. 8O

Don't think it'd be called 'Scream' though...perhaps 'Grunt'? Or 'Moan'? Or even 'Can't a guy get a reach-around?!'... :P
