I've been invited on two hunts this year; trophy whitetails in the Appalachian foothills of eastern Ohio, and south Texas whitetails and feral hogs near Houston.

I can probably only afford to do one or the other.

Damn.

I'm near Houston, but that shouldn't influence you.

Have you hunted deer before? Javalina/feral hogs?

I've killed right around thirty or so deer in my life. ;) A few elk, a half-dozen or so antelope, and one javelina. Haven't gotten a feral hog yet.

I don't even want to start trying to reckon up the number of pheasants, rabbits, grouse, ducks, geese and so on.

If you want the danger, go for the hogs. Especially feral ones. Be sure to bring a _big_ backup gun.

If you want interesting scenery, go for the Ozarks :)

Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70 should be big enough, I reckon. The Marlin action is tough enough to steamroller up some almost .458 Win Mag level loads.

I originally bought it with retirement (Alaska) in mind.

I've been told that some of the pigs have developed hide that's basically armour.

Funny - while they're domesticated, they stay thin, sensitive skinned. When they get loose, they _change_. Not in a generation, but in a year or so.

Oh - and try to stay near a tree. Pigs can't climb.
(unlike bears)

Yeah, swine go feral really really easily. I'm not sure why.

People I know who hunt them tell me to look for a young, tender sow if I want one for eating. With big trophy boars, you take pictures, take the skull for curing (that's the trophy) and bury the rest.

From my experience hunting javelinas, I'd sure believe it.

Best as I can recall, to eat boar, you have to hang it for at _least_ three days before it's edible.

(aging -i.e. rotting - the meat)
