So, after trying and trying, my relationship with my Remington 770 is just plain not going to work out. As they say, the marraige is doomed if one party is not willing to make the effort, and I swear if I have to unjam a bolt or get a creeping trigger readjusted again I am going to mail my next paycheck to the damned Brady campaign. So I'm pretty much stuck with AKs and other caveman guns until my hobby money increases significantly or I get the bad taste of cheap plasticky modern crap out of my mouth.

Fortunately, with all the work I did on the Rem and the spotless finish I kept it in I can sell it for nearly factory cost, which is also the value of a spanking new Saiga which I've had my eye on, either 7.62 or yeehaw 12ga. What I'd like to know first is how well they actually perform, from people who've fired more than half a mag and ideally actually bothered to aim during that. Anyone here got one? Are there any quirks or mechanical defects endemic to the make I should look out for? Is the accuracy actually noticeably superior to bog-standard WASRs and SARs? I don't need a sniper rifle, sub-MOA is a silly excess for anything I'd need and my previous shopping ventures convinced me I can't get that plus decent functionality for less than four figures, but is it at least possible to hit the broad side of a barn with one at 200m or should I just give up and go for the shotty?

From others, any alternate arms I should look at for cheap, non-finicky stuff that's fun to shoot and makes a decent deer rifle? "Fun to shoot" here meaning not jamming every other round, not removing most of the skin from my hand due to mechanical awkwardness, high enough caliber I can actually tell when I've hit something, and quick easy action. I'll take something in the 2MOA area if I can get it, but weight and reaching past 300m (or hitting more accurately than what I'd need to take down dinner) isn't really an issue for me.

ah, well, I've always been partial to the '03 Springfield action, personally.

I test-drove a 20ga Saiga shotgun, it worked okay but the fit-and-finish left a lot to be desired... Course, it is based on an AK action so maybe that's why.

My shotty is a Remington 870 Express Magnum in 12ga and I lurves it.
