Midwestern USA country boy version?

Tasty animals (not even "owned" by other monkeys with fancy shoes and too many tools) are walking around all over the place. You need very minimal equipment and essentially no cash to harvest some, please disregard any mainstream media propaganda to the contrary. Forebrain volume and opposable thumbs trump superior sense of hearing and smell along with running faster than a homo sapiens nearly every time. Ask the Imperial mammoth about that, if you can find one.

If you were not raised in a family that routinely does this thing, it is hard to make the jump to the obvious solution. (If not actually starved to the point of interfering with more subtle interpretations of ethics, anyhow. Go far enough back, every lineage of your ancestors made the connection- Or your particular mix of DNA wouldn't be here)

I was past 40 before being broke and hungry made the required connection for me. I had been gardening since I was 14, but you don't get all that much protein from a plot of vegetables and culinary herbs.

Right now, there is about 20kg of venison which I converted from elegant, beautiful Bambi to prosaic human food 7 months ago in a freezer near me. Plus carcasses of some chickens, ducks and turkeys who I both raised from the incubator to slaughter and cried a bit after killing. And stocks made from cooked carcasses, bones and bits that modern USA people wouldn't class as edible.

I don't waste anything, not even the bones and skins (the chicken feet get scalded, skinned & boiled for soup stock, it is ALL chicken, even the beak). It would be very disrespectful NOT to use every possible bit, I won't disrespect those who keep me alive.

I've eaten ramen noodles from Wal-Mart while having less than $10 cash to my name and no other options too. You do the best thing you can with the resources available under your circumstances. If you live in NYC? Pigeons are plentiful. They are fairly well sterilized during cooking, also rather tasty if properly handled and prepared.

Am I a bad person for living at the expense of other animals? I have never taken more than I and my family needed.

If you have pasta instead of rice, pasta + tuna or pasta + canned chicken is very salvageable. Season to taste.

I would overcook the pasta quite a bit. The more you cook it, the more water it absorbs, making it both easier to digest, and filling your stomach (volume sensor) faster.

Para and Petey need to have some dialog together. Just because.
