Had some the other day on my sushi lunch. Green stuff with a ... unique flavour. I liked it. I wonder where the taste comes from and what the ingredients are. Someone here must know.

Horseradish. As for recipes, you can probably google for it :)

Technically it's not horseradish, although a lot of the "wasabi" you find is just horseradish dyed green. True wasabi is wasabia japonica, a member of the cabbage family.

I love that stuff.

Right, but true wasabi is a different type of root vegetable in the same family. There are subtle differences between real wasabi and horseradish in the flavor.

As far as vegetables in the same family go, take a look at tomatoes, potatoes, bell peppers, and jalepenos. They're all part of the same family, yet they're radically different. So don't say that just because it's part of the same family, it's a very similar (or identical) thing.

Wasabi itself is apparently rather hard to grow, and takes about 10 years of cultivating to be ready for harvest. I checked into growing it here, and it takes all sorts of specialized stuff to keep it going, from special fertilizer all the way to having to be grown inside a greenhouse. Then there was the 10 year thing which turned me off.

I think I'll just plant some horseradish in a few half whiskey barrels. Don't want to plant horseradish uncontained because it's very invasive.

This site has pictures of raw horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) but not raw wasabi (Wasabia japonica); I am still looking for the latter.
