I've just caught the bug.

Anyone had any good or bad experiences with bubble tea, any favourites, flavours to avoid, etc? What do you like to put in it. I had a taro with pearls and green apple jelly yesterday. That's my favourite so far. One flavour, I forget what it was, tasted like I was being poisoned by some kind of industrial solvent. Does that sound familiar to anyone?

Never had it. Seen it once, at the Anime Oasis con in Boise, but I've never had it.

Iced tea with milk and usually other stuff, with balls of tapioca at the bottom. Usually served with an extra-wide straw so you can suck up the tapioca balls. Also called "pearl tea".

You can't even begin to imagine what you are missing.
Back in college there was a bubble tea place right across the street from my dorm. Had over 100 varieties prepared cold, hot, or frozen. My favorites were taro, or banana... both in frozen shake form with the tapioca balls, not the jellies.

For Bubble Tea updates, check my LJ. The place I go to most often knows me now - I've become a regular, how sad is that.

Usually found in places with a large concentration of young asian people. I think it was first popularized in Taiwan and spread to the U.S. by way of college students. Nowadays practically every take-out place near UC Berkeley serves them, even places that serve non-east-asian ethnic food (like Greek or Indian).

That sounds right, cos some of the places I've been to adertise their products as 100% Taiwanese. It's apparently a selling point nowadays.

I finally tried some. It was in a can labelled "Pearl Milk Tea" and it was pretty good.

It wasn't. But it was drinkable.

I like taro. Also, coffee.

A phở place in town (actually part of chain) also serves ice slush drinks with tapioca pearls. Among other flavors, they include durian (smells like babypoop, but tastes great!) and avocado. Yes, a sweet avocado drink. It's good!

Nope, it's Vietnamese for noodle soup (well, a particular kind of noodle soup).
