Is there a connection here?

Pranger is even named 'Drake Pranger', and the author of the above-mentioned series is David Drake.

Yup. It's a nod to David Drake's "Hammer's Slammers" novels and short stories.

Thanks for the info. Drake is my favorite SF author, and Schlock is my favorite webcomic.
