It's all tied up and clean. One of the Toughs committed a crime on camera. Ennesby is their legal expert.

Cut and dried.

But in what court, if any?

Are they going to kill all the witnesses?

I really don't see why they couldn't have sorted out the legal consequences before jumping in. They knew how it would play out, and they had access to the laws they were to dance around. And it's not like they needed to wait for a meat sophont to process it.

I guess I'll just have to accept it has a narrative based decision. Bah.

What murder? Just a spit shine and some stitches and the guy is as good as new.

Who said murder?

Exactly. The captain's in one piece with the correct number of limbs in the correct position. No idea why he's gibbering like a madman tho.

I was thinking a couple of other 'm' words. 'Maim' and 'mayhem.'

You are assuming that there are legal loopholes to dance around in. If this system is as xenophobic as it seems the law might be as simple as, "The prosecutor provides evidence that the filthy xenos could have plausibly committed a crime, then the judge decides if they are guilty and determines the appropriate punishment."

Not much you can do about that except not enter the system at all. At least without resorting to extra legal persuasion.

More like "the prosecutor provides evidence that they are foreigners, and the judge declares them guilty of murder, invasion, hijacking, high treason, child-rape, and puppy-kicking, and sentences them to death immediately."

It will probably go something like this: "you have been accused of these crimes, how do you plead?"
"Well, actually your Honor, it didn't happen like-"
"Silence! Foreigners are not allowed to testify in our courts."
