In every case where something has been teraported by somebody besides Pius Dei Petey, a teraport device has been present on the target being teraported. In cases where the device wasn't there originally (the squid, the machine intelligences, the Tinth extraction) then there were TWO teraports - one to put the right equipment in place, and then another one to get stuff where it's going.

Pius Dei Petey (the Petey who has powers approaching godhood) has sufficient energy at his disposal to open single wormholes that are large enough to be useful. Stuff he teleports (note the changed spelling) does not need to be ripped apart, though in some cases he may still "rotate" the subject through a pure-energy/pure-gravity phase in order to facilitate transfer.

Note that this is similar to how the wormgates work. They never ripped anything apart, but they DID convert traveling starships completely into a single gravitic pulse, which was converted back at the destination. And, incidentally, copied and analyzed and the copy destroyed at some buuthandi or another.

So, Mr. Tayler, this means that while it looks like the admiral is cut in half, his body is all still there from his reference frame. In fact, from his reference frame, he hasn't moved anywhere. Only the mouths of the wormhole, ~10^5 light years apart, move around him. Elegant travel method. It's a pity that it is probably not possible.

I'd suggest that Petey could engage in some copy+backup activity of his own, if it weren't for the fact that Petey doesn't need to mindrip you to know what you're thinking anymore.

Edit: Subsiduary thought. If giant AIs are more likely to get caught in loops than smaller AIs, does that mean there is a possibility the entire galactic fleetmind might conceivably destroy itself? Or is Petey & co. so large and complex they've outpaced that problem?

Possible, but the number of connected AIs should make that more difficult.

Just don't go mentioning ghosts! :P

Added to the Schlock Science, Canonical thread as:

[*]Per Howard's comment every non-Petey teraport ever shown has required a teraport to "carry" the teraportee along. Petey is able to create a wormhole from anywhere to anywhere, thereby teleporting (not teraporting) an object without the need of a teraport device.
